In this exclusive interview, we sit down with Deak J. Smalls, a talented actor from Charleston, South Carolina, whose passion for acting has taken him from small-town stages to major film and theater productions. Known for his versatility in both film and stage, Deak shares his journey into the world of acting, his experiences working on critically acclaimed projects, and his vision for the future.

How Did Your Acting Journey Begin?

Deak J. Smalls: It all started when I was in second grade. I remember being captivated by the idea of storytelling and performance. I was always the kid who loved to put on plays for my family or act out stories in class. Growing up in Charleston, I didn’t have a lot of professional exposure to acting, but I always felt that pull. After school, I did community theater and got involved in every opportunity I could find. My college years were key in helping me decide to pursue acting professionally. After graduating, I realized I needed formal training, so I started studying in earnest. From there, things just took off.

What Was the Turning Point in Your Career?

Deak J. Smalls: I’d say the turning point came in 2019 when I had the opportunity to perform in Clarence Felder’s Shakespeare’s Macbeth with the Actor’s Theatre of South Carolina. It was a huge milestone for me, as working with such an esteemed company on a classic like Macbeth was a significant challenge. That experience really pushed me to think deeply about my craft and helped me grow as an actor. It was a moment when I felt like I was starting to find my true voice in the world of theater.

You’ve Worked in Both Theater and Film. How Do You Approach These Different Mediums?

Deak J. Smalls: That’s a great question. Theater and film are two very different beasts, but both require deep emotional commitment. With theater, you have to be fully present and live in the moment since there’s no retake. Every night is a new experience, and the audience’s energy directly influences the performance. In film, you’re working in a more intimate space, and there’s a level of precision that comes with the process. You have the opportunity to do things over, which is a bit of a comfort, but it also requires a focus on detail.

I approach both with the same level of commitment. For me, it’s all about understanding the character inside and out and then finding a way to bring them to life in whatever medium I’m working in. I’ve been fortunate to work in both, and I believe each has strengthened my abilities as an actor.

You’ve Had Over Twenty Film Roles. Which Role Stands Out the Most to You?

Deak J. Smalls: Every role has had its own unique challenges, but if I had to pick, I’d say working in Macbeth and in some of the films I’ve been a part of have been the most rewarding. With theater, it’s always been about pushing my limits. In film, it’s about connecting with an audience in a different way. I love that each role has taught me something new about myself and the craft of acting. But every project has been significant to my development.

What Are Some of the Challenges You’ve Faced as an Actor?

Deak J. Smalls: Like any career, acting comes with its challenges. I think one of the biggest obstacles I’ve faced is finding roles that align with my growth as an actor. Early on, it can be difficult to break into the industry and land significant roles, especially when you’re starting out. But I’ve learned that persistence is key. You have to continue developing your skills and putting yourself out there. In terms of roles, I’ve been lucky to land diverse parts in different genres, which keeps me constantly evolving.

Another challenge, especially in the South, is that the industry isn’t as large as in places like New York or LA, so you often have to travel for opportunities. However, I wouldn’t change that journey for anything. Every challenge has taught me something valuable.

What Is Your Vision for the Future of Your Career?

Deak J. Smalls: My vision is to continue growing as an actor, take on more complex roles, and work with talented filmmakers, directors, and fellow actors. I’m really interested in expanding into more film projects and potentially television as well. I want to continue challenging myself with new, diverse roles that stretch my abilities. Ultimately, my goal is to make a lasting impact in the entertainment world. I want to be known as an actor who takes risks and brings authenticity to every role.

Any Advice for Aspiring Actors Who Look Up to You?

Deak J. Smalls: Absolutely. The first piece of advice I’d give is to never stop learning. The craft of acting is always evolving, and you can never stop growing as an artist. Whether you’re taking classes, watching performances, or simply learning from your own experiences, always keep pushing yourself to improve. Also, be patient with the process. It’s easy to get frustrated when things don’t happen as fast as you’d like, but every step you take is part of your journey. And finally, stay true to your unique voice. The more authentic you are, the more you’ll stand out in this industry.

What’s Next for Deak J. Smalls?

Right now, I’m focused on continuing to build my portfolio and take on new and exciting projects. I’ve got some upcoming film and theater roles that I’m really excited about, and I’m looking forward to what the future holds. The best is yet to come!
