The Engineered Tax Services National Ambassador says incarceration does not only remove a resident — it can remove a father, and a second chance that ignores that fact is incomplete
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Charles “Duke” Tanner can recite the record. Undefeated boxer. Author. Presidential pardon. National Ambassador. None of those titles are the loss that built the work.
He left home when his son was two. He came home when that son was 19. Sixteen years, six months, and 21 days sat between a toddler and a young man Tanner did not get to raise in the house. He missed the ordinary days. He missed a high school graduation. He got the years back only after they had already been spent.
That is the story he is done letting other people soften.
“I refused to let prison completely erase me as a father, a man, or a person with a purpose,” Tanner said. “I left my son when he was two years old and came home when he was 19.”
The Sentence the Child Also Served
Tanner, Vice President of Community Affairs & Outreach and National Ambassador for Engineered Tax Services, argues that the country still talks about reentry as if it happens to one person. It does not. A sentence reaches children, parents, and the household that has to keep going after the door closes.
He lived the other side of that door as a 19–0 professional fighter from Gary, Indiana, then as a man serving two life terms on a first non-violent offense. He started boxing at six. The ring taught him discipline and how to get up. Prison asked whether that fight still existed when there was no bell. Faith and family kept him from disappearing. Clemency in 2020 let him out. A full pardon in May 2025 cleared the record. None of it returned the childhood he missed.

Duke Got Life: A Boxer’s Fight for Freedom and One Last Shot at Redemption exists, he has said, because a speech cannot hold that cost. A few minutes on a stage cannot show what it does to a boy to grow up with a father in a cell, or what it does to a man to come home and have to earn a relationship he was supposed to already have.
What Fathers Need After the Gate
Tanner’s public work now runs through fatherhood, reentry, and the practical things a release paper does not include. Housing. Employment. Healthcare. Transportation. Mentorship. A way to become present again, not only free.
“Bringing a father home is only the beginning,” he said. “We must help him become present again.”
He is blunt with men getting out now. Do not let pride block the ask for help. Stay away from the people and places that threaten the freedom. Be honest with the family about where you actually are. You do not have to fix 16 years on the first day. Every decision still has to move toward stability.
That counsel is personal before it is policy. He is a husband, a father, and a grandfather who has said he wants his son to remember one thing: that his father came home and became the man he was supposed to be.
Why This Sits Inside a Tax Firm
At Engineered Tax Services, Tanner’s title is outreach. The reason fatherhood is in the job is simpler than the org chart. A father who cannot work cannot stay. A church or nonprofit serving those families still needs grants, incentives, and a path to capital. Purpose, he has said, needs resources.

He points overlooked operators, returning citizens, and community groups toward that path. The public line is direct: text DUKE to 26786.
He is also Co-Founder of Legacy Impact Technologies and the Legacy Impact Foundation, and works with the Jack Brewer Foundation, REFORM Alliance, and the Aleph Institute. A 12-week prison-based fatherhood program, Round by Round, has been built from Duke Got Life.
The measure he will accept is not applause for the comeback. It is whether another child has to wait 17 years for a father the system already knew how to lock up, and never planned how to bring home.
