Dr. Meleeka Clary has a story that’s as inspiring as it is compelling. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she grew up in a family that faced its share of challenges but also instilled in her a deep sense of resilience and independence. Now, as a scholar, actor, filmmaker, and mother, she balances a full life with an infectious passion for living in the moment.
What keeps you grounded in such a busy life?
I think gratitude is what keeps me grounded. Life can be overwhelming at times, but I always try to focus on the things that matter most—my family, my health, and the small joys that each day brings..
Growing up, I learned early on that life isn’t always easy, but that doesn’t mean you give up. I lost my father young, cared for my mother, and worked hard to create a better future for myself and my kids. Through it all, I realized that staying humble and appreciating the journey is key.
Why is the beach so special to you?
The beach is my happy place. There’s something about the sound of the waves, the breeze, and the sun that makes all the stress fade away. It’s where I go to reset, think, and just enjoy being alive.
To me, the beach represents freedom. It’s a reminder that sometimes you need to step away from the hustle and just breathe. Whether I’m there with my kids or by myself, it’s always a moment of peace and clarity.
You often say, “Enjoy every day like it’s your last.” What does that mean to you?
It’s a reminder to live intentionally. Life is unpredictable, and we don’t know what tomorrow will bring. I’ve had moments where everything seemed to fall apart, but those experiences taught me to value the time we have and make it count.
It’s not about big gestures—it’s the little things. Laughing with my kids, pursuing a passion, or even enjoying a quiet moment. I believe in finding joy wherever you can and living without regret.
How do you balance work, family, and relaxation?
It’s not always easy, but I’ve learned to prioritize. My kids come first—they’re my world. Beyond that, I try to make time for the things that recharge me, like dancing, acting, or even just spending time at the beach.
I’ve always been a hard worker. Whether it was juggling jobs while going to school or raising three kids as a single mom, I made sure to keep moving forward. But I’ve also realized that you can’t pour from an empty cup, so I make it a point to take care of myself too.
What’s one of the biggest lessons you’ve learned?
Never give up. Life will test you in ways you can’t always prepare for, but it’s how you respond that matters. When I lost my father, it was devastating. When I faced challenges in my marriage and career, it was tough. But through everything, I’ve learned that perseverance and faith will get you through.
Another important lesson is to stay true to yourself. It’s easy to lose sight of who you are when you’re trying to meet expectations or overcome struggles. But when you’re authentic and grounded in your values, you’ll find your way.

What advice would you give to others trying to find balance in their lives?
Take it one day at a time. Don’t try to do everything at once. Focus on what’s most important and be kind to yourself along the way.
Remember to celebrate your wins, no matter how small they seem. Life isn’t just about reaching the finish line—it’s about enjoying the journey.
