Q: Jessica, it’s fantastic to have you with us today. Let’s start at the beginning. Can you tell us about where you’re from and what your early life was like?

Thank you! I’m excited to be here. I grew up in Moreno Valley, California, which was a pretty laid-back place to start out. I went to California Baptist University in Riverside for both my college and grad studies. Since then, I’ve lived in some pretty cool places—Orange County, Las Vegas, and West Hollywood. Each place has left its mark on me, whether it’s the vibrant city life of Las Vegas or the creative energy of West Hollywood.

Q: Sounds like you’ve had quite the journey! How did you first get into modeling, and what were some of the hurdles you faced early on?

My modeling journey kicked off with hand modeling in 2021. It was a good way to dip my toes into the industry, but I quickly realized I wanted to dive deeper. One of the toughest parts was breaking into the scene and making connections. I had to hustle hard—reaching out to photographers and makeup artists to set up my own shoots. It wasn’t always easy, but I was determined to turn my vision into reality.

Q: Your determination really shines through. What are some of the standout achievements or projects you’re most proud of?

Oh, there have been some memorable moments! One of my favorites was collaborating on a National Donut Day shoot—who doesn’t love donuts, right? Another standout was a Y2K-themed shoot I did. It was a fun throwback to the early 2000s, and I loved bringing that era back to life. A huge highlight was seeing myself on a billboard in Buena Park, CA, thanks to Anastasia Magazine. It was surreal seeing my face on such a grand scale. The first two images on the billboard are from @dwizal7123 and @ecp.events.la, and the photo on the far right is by @opticallusionimages with MUA @makeupbynorma. And dressing up as Beetlejuice for a Halloween-themed group shoot with Eric Johnson was another memorable experience. My friend Emmy Larios did an incredible job with the makeup, and those photos even got published in a magazine!

Q: Those projects sound like so much fun! What are you currently working on?

I’ve got a cool shoot coming up where the photographer is going to use a projector to cast different backgrounds behind my silhouette. It’s a new concept for me, and I’m really excited to see how it turns out. Shoutout to MUA @reynakhalil and photographer @opticallusionimages for making this shoot happen.

I also recently auditioned for a well-known designer. If it goes well, it could lead to a salaried position, which would be a big step up for me.

Q: That sounds fascinating. What are your goals for the future?

I’ve got big dreams! I’d love to sign with an international agency to work and travel between the US and Europe, especially France. I’m also interested in shooting with Playboy, doing more hand modeling, and exploring boudoir work.

Beyond modeling, I’m looking to branch out into acting and voice-over work. I was in a Wine Lab commercial earlier this year and have been taking voice-over classes to hone my skills. Ideally, I’d love to combine modeling, hosting, voice-over work, and acting into one diverse career. And yes, a shoot with my celebrity crush would be a dream come true!

Q: Your vision is truly inspiring. What advice would you give to those just starting out in modeling?

Jessica Shanel: My advice is to be proactive and create your own opportunities. Don’t wait around for someone to notice you. Reach out to photographers, makeup artists, and other creatives to set up collaborations. And stay true to your own style and vision. Authenticity is key in this industry.

Q: That’s great advice. How do you manage to balance your personal life with such a demanding career?

Balancing everything can be tricky, but I try to stay organized and manage my time well. It’s also important to take breaks and spend quality time with family and friends. They keep me grounded and motivated, which helps me stay focused on my career.

Interviewer: Thank you so much for sharing your story, Jessica. It’s been a pleasure talking with you, and I’m excited to see where your career takes you next.

Jessica Shanel: Thank you! I’ve enjoyed our chat. I appreciate the chance to share my journey.
